What is SMART Tots Yoga?

SMART stands for Stretch, Move And Relax Together, and is a continuation of the Birthlight Baby Yoga approach for mobile babies and toddlers up to around 2 years. Using songs and rhymes with plenty of movement and stretching, this class is designed to support the transition from babyhood to independent movement. As babies make the transition to independence, physical contact is often diminished; the Together aspect of the class allows parents to sustain loving and playful contact, providing a shared experience and focus between parent and child. Classes also provide an opportunity for parents to exercise and have fun with their tots.

Each class lasts 45 minutes, with 15 minutes at the end for chatting to friends and for tots to play. The sessions are a mix of activities that promote balance, flexibility and independent movement.  Each session is very active with a winding down and relaxation time at the end. The adults in the class work with the babies and toddlers helping to facilitate the movements and modelling the practices whilst the infants share the experience, participating at their own pace. In the same way that baby yoga is not done to a baby, but with a baby, the SMART classes allow infants to take what they need from the session and share in the fun with their parents.
